Report: Inaugural Mass on April 18, 2015

The Latin Mass Society of Bloomington, IN, celebrated its inaugural public Mass at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church yesterday, Saturday, April 18, in honor of Our Lady, courtesy of Fr. Jude Orakwe.

We prepared the Missal inserts ourselves (pictured below); you can download and freely distribute a copy here. My hope is to eventually produce and publish, at this blog, an insert for every Sunday, each of the major feast days, and each of the votive Masses.

Our altar cards from SPORCH, the Society for the Preservation of Roman Catholic Heritage, arrived just in the nick of time for this Mass. Not only were they surprisingly affordable (at roughly $300 for the set), they were also gorgeously appointed, with antiquated typeface and stunning illustrations, and they nicely matched the color scheme of both the altar and the sanctuary.

Fr. Jude celebrated Mass admirably; he has virtually mastered the low Mass in surprisingly few sessions. If he was hobbled at all, it was only by my halting and workman-like service at the altar (I’m grateful to St. John Berchmans, patron saint of altar servers, whose intercession alone was sufficient to keep me from tripping over my own cassock on this, my first occasion serving at a publicly-celebrated Mass).

Despite the odd and probably unfavorable time of day, the lure of lovely weather outside, the short notice and the general lack of publicity, turnout was (I think) encouraging.

As of now, we are preliminarily planning another Mass in about two weeks (as Fr. Jude will be traveling outside the country to attend the ordination of a friend — please pray for his safe travels); an announcement about our next Mass time will follow shortly.
